Santa Cruz, from the harbor to the garage

Rust off.
Bare metal back.

Laser cleaning and welding for boats, classic cars and anything else made of metal. No grit, no chemical strippers. Text us a photo of the part and we'll let you know what's possible.

We come to you.

Driveways, boatyards and job sites around Santa Cruz County, and the harbor when the marina allows it. Tell us where the work is when you send photos.

Or bring it to the shop

Drop off parts and hardware by appointment at our shop on Delaware Avenue in Santa Cruz.

What we work on

Most jobs around here fall into one of three piles.

Boats

Salt air works on every fitting. We clean corrosion and old coatings off cleats, rails, stanchion bases, hinges and other marine hardware, and repair metal fittings that can be welded.

On-site at the harbor when the marina allows it, or bring the hardware to the shop.

Text a photo of yours

Classic cars

Strip rust and paint from panels, brackets, chassis parts and engine pieces, one area at a time, so you keep the original metal and details you care about. Cracked brackets and worn joints can be assessed for welding.

Valuable or thin parts get a test patch first.

Everything else

Gates, railings, tools, machinery, metal art and the odd part nobody else wants to touch. If it is metal and it is rusty, painted or broken, send a photo.

Individuals and businesses both welcome.

Why laser instead of sandblasting or stripper?

Laser cleaning isn't right for every job, and we'll tell you when it isn't. Here's where it tends to win.

TopicLaserSandblastingChemical stripper
What gets left behindRemoved rust and paint turn to dust, which is collected. No grit to sweep up.Spent media works into seams, bilges and engine bays.Sludge and rinse water to contain and dispose of.
Masking nearby partsUsually little. It only cleans where the beam is aimed.Surrounding surfaces need covering.Surrounding surfaces need protecting.
Working near the waterNo chemicals and no rinse water.Media is hard to contain outdoors.Runoff has to stay out of drains and the harbor.
Small, precise areasCan clean a single bolt head or a narrow strip.Hard to keep to a small area.Tends to spread past the edges.
The metal underneathNo abrasive. It does heat the surface, so thin or valuable parts get a test patch first.Abrasive can wear or roughen the surface. Can attack some metals and needs neutralizing.

Hi, I'm Payton.

I grew up in Santa Cruz and have spent years in the local art and maker scene, including helping build intricate projects for Burning Man. That work taught me to care about how metal is finished, not only whether it holds.

A laser lets me take rust and paint off a part without grit or harsh chemicals, and make small, careful welds. I started Cruzbeam to bring that to the boats, cars and odd metal projects around here.

You'll deal with me directly, from the first text to the finished part.

How to book

It starts with a photo. We'll talk about the work and where it can be done.

  1. Text a photo

Include roughly how big it is, the material if you know it, and where it is.

  2. Assess the work

A test patch for cleaning, or a material and joint assessment for welding.

  3. Do the job

We agree on the work and price, then work at the shop or your location.

  4. Review the result

Check the finish together and talk through anything it needs next, like paint or coating.
